Widi Asari
Born in 1994, lives and works in Bandung, Indonesia. As a fashion designer with an educational background in Master of Applied Science in Textile Engineering and Apparel Technology, as well as pursuing a career as a fashion designer who was born and raised on the margins, I have questions; How to envision an alternative future in the fashion industry? How to look at aesthetics outside the established or conventional textile industry system?
As I reflect on my journey as a fashion designer, I initially set my sights on joining the mainstream fashion industry. However, my path transformed after encounters with interdisciplinary artists, indigenous communities, and textile industry unions. These experiences opened my eyes to a new perspective on the fashion world, revealing the darker realities of extraction and exploitation tied to clothing. Confronted with the industry's contamination, injustice, and waste, I now reimagine fabric through my work. I choose to reinterpret fabric and my childhood memories—filled with both tension and meaning—while learning from collective stories about the cultural and environmental significance of textiles.
