bodies that make, bodies that consume (2022)
State Of Fashion Bienalle 2022
3 June - 10 July 2022
bodies that make, bodies that consume, project collaboration with Santiago Utima from Colombia, Siviwe from Shouth Africa. State of Fashion Biennale 2022 | Curated by NOT____ENOUGH Collective | Eusebius Church , Arnhem, Netherland.
The installation bodies that make, bodies that consume reflects on amongst others the truth of workers and the conditions of workers for clothing manufacturers. The co-creators of the installation, The installation tries to reflect on the working conditions of garment-industry workers and the social and ecological impact of the production process.
The lab coats (Colombia), Uniform shirts (Indonesia), and dresses (South Africa) of workers in the textile and clothing factories so-called global south hang on clothes racks. In the personal stories printed on the labels, you can read about exhaustion and exploitation: through the hard work conditions, contemporary colonialism, and the destruction of local cultures and ecosystems, hope to bridge the gap between ‘the hands that make’ and the ‘bodies that consume’ with a desire of addressing the various emotional and physical situations labourers endure.
The stains on the collar of the uniform shirt represent the black mold found on workers uniforms, discovered by Widi Asari and Riyadhus Shalihin in their research. The installation was created at the exhibition Ways of Caring biennial, Fashion as Encounters @stateoffashionnl - 2022.
