The Secrets of Pocket (2024)

This work was born from a deep question about the uncertainty of "sustainability." In my journey through the fashion world, I followed the conventional path to achieve my dream of becoming a designer. However, along the way, I experienced various phases—going with the flow, rejecting, accepting, discovering, losing, rejecting again, until I ultimately felt confused. Fundamental questions about the dynamics and chaos of the fashion world began to emerge.

With my knowledge of textile goods and garments, I adopted the logic of pockets in pants to explore the reality that is visible on the surface and what lies hidden beneath. Through this perspective, I realized that many environmentally friendly campaigns have hidden agendas that ultimately focus on financial gain, or "pocket content."

I present this work in the form of a performance installation aimed at uncovering the narrative behind the pocket. I display 12 pairs of pants, each with a pocket containing texts of concerns that arose during my journey in the fashion industry. The pants are patterned with **kolenjer** (Indigenous calendar) motifs borrowed from the Baduy indigenous community. This motif represents the timeline of my career journey as a fashion designer.

This installation not only presents physical objects but also conveys stories and concepts responding to sustainability issues within the textile and fashion industries. Through this work, I want to invite the public to question the 'certainty' by making it 'uncertain.' For as long as the 'market' remains the sole objective, there will always be hidden motives behind claims of environmentally friendly movements in the textile and fashion industries.
